Chief Joseph's Lament

from Yellowstone by Lou Murray

/

about

Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce passed through Yellowstone National Park in 1877 on his flight from an inhospitable Indian reservation. Headed for the Canadian border, he and his band were intercepted less than 50 miles from the border by General Howard's troops and forced to surrender. Chief Joseph promised to keep the peace forever. He and 400 of his followers were imprisoned and exiled for a time; finally, in 1885, they were allowed to return to the Northwest, but not ot their ancestral homelands.
